At the very end of the Makarska riviera or at the beginning, if you are coming from the south, the largest place on the Gornja Makarska coastline is located, Gradac.
The inhabitants of this place successfully cherish tradition with a modern touch. The positive development of tourism, didn’t put traditional agriculture, fishing and olive growing in second plan, in fact it makes tourist offer richer, year by year. One of the main advantages of Gradac is the pleasant climate throughout the year, along with Hvar, which has the highest number of sunny days at Adriatic coast.
Rich archaeological finds indicate the Gradac past in Roman times, the Middle Ages, all over to the present day. Emperor Porphyrogenitus mentions the medieval town of Lapčanj (Labinac), and King Ostoja also mentions it in 1417. In the 17th century, the ancient town of Lapčanj changed its main defensive position and renamed the place to Gradac. The remains of the old tower from the 16th century have also been preserved, as well as the sacred monuments of the church of St. Mihovil from the 19th century and the church of St. Ante in the cemetery from the 18th century.
Gradac has a variety of resources for the development of diverse forms of sports and recreational tourism. Landscaped hiking trails are a challenge for walks, and nearby hills, for hiking and free climbing. Area of the Gradac Riviera has about twenty kilometres of bicycle paths.
