The protected Biokovo Nature Park spreads along the mountain of Biokovo, and the mountain itself is like a huge wall above the Makarska riviera. The largest and most important monument of culture in this area is the Franciscan Monastery of Saint Mary founded in the 14th century. The abandoned monastery was settled in 1468 by the Franciscans from the Province of Bosna Srebrna, and they are still active today. The museum offers an ethnological collection, peasant furniture and tools, as well as different Croatian national costumes.One of the most interesting paintings is certainly the one from the 18th century, showing a Dalmatian dog at The Last Supper, which is proof of the authenticity of the breed. The surrounding of the monastery is enriched with a botanical garden, which serves as a green oasis right by the sea.
